Zack Is Almost a Book

Whoever heard of a little boy dreaming about a garden of zucchini, gourds, pumpkins, and watermelons? That’s exactly what Zack does in my almost-book Zack’s Zany Zucchiniland. My illustrator, Amanda Baker (no relation, surprisingly), turned my imaginary Zack into a most appealing and energetic young lad. It’s been a thrill for me, the wordsmith, to see her take my manuscript of 1000 words and create a colorful, playful, sometimes humorous, and fully descriptive illustrated book. Zack is bored, lonely, exasperating, charming, ingenious, and determined–not to mention his parents who have to work at keeping a step ahead of him. Amanda captured it all. Zack is the second in my “circle” of kid gardening books with a plot. (All will be hardbound 8″ x 10″ with different characters, plot, and illustrators.) Zack follows about a year after Mrs. Feeny and the Grubby Garden Gang came onto the scene. They don’t know each other . . . but maybe they will down the road, just maybe. In the meantime, Amanda and I await as book designer Rita Ter Sarkissoff pulls everything together into what I know will be a fun, charming, and slightly instructive kid gardening book, including a couple of recipes of–what else, of course, Zucchini Bread! Look for Zack in early April.

  1. It’s so exciting to see Zach come to life. I love the life and color of the illustrations. This should be a winner.

  2. Sandy Baker says:

Amanda Baker did the illustrations. A terrific job–and she’s available now!
